Start a Company

The two kinds of startup founder: which one are you?

Generally speaking, there are two types of startup founder.

Typical first-time founders…

  • See the end game but not the first step
  • Have a “game-changing idea” but no actual proof
  • Are reluctant to share in case they are copied
  • (And because they secretly dread being wrong)
  • So risk mistakes by not challenging assumptions
  • And crave entrepreneurship without understanding it

In contrast, second-time founders often…

  • Have many ideas but feel wedded to none
  • Discuss details openly, seeking signs of demand
  • See the first step but not necessarily the end game
  • Seek convincing proof that their idea won’t work
  • Are prepared to commit only once they feel sure
  • Because they know entrepreneurship can be awful

If you’re sitting on a big idea, don’t let it fester until it’s too late, but don’t do anything dramatic either.

Yes, it’s hard to focus on two things at once, but quitting your job should not be the first step.

Instead, find a way to PROVE if your idea is really any good.

To do that, try to prove that NOBODY wants it.

If you can’t, you may be onto something.
